- Frustrated by your inability to integrate your eclectic interests into a coherent lifestyle
- Seeking to cultivate the highest expression of what is natural in you
Then you've come to the right place.
What's this?
Renaissance Habits (RH) is a practical program for self-cultivation. It is specifically designed for people looking to cultivate themselves holistically—or, as I prefer to phrase it, for those looking to become modern Renaissance Men. The program is built atop the fundamental belief that you are like a garden waiting to flourish and that all you need are the right conditions to do so. The goal of RH is to foster those conditions by helping you understand and nurture your natural inclinations.
How will RH do that?
RH helps you understand and incorporate four essential and complementary habits into your life: Writing, Moving, Reading, and Learning. The program integrates these practices into a structured (yet flexible) practical framework designed to help you cultivate the highest expression of what is natural in you. It never imposes anything on you; it respects your individuality and encourages you to explore and exploit it.
Why habits?
If Thomas Carlyle is right and “the history of the world is the biography of great men”, then the history of the world must—at least in part—echo their daily habits. Habits are the elementary building block of our lives; they are to our days as atoms to molecules, or cells to living organisms. Therefore, to set the right conditions for your best self to flourish, I reckon taking a look at something as concrete and practical as your daily habits is a good way to start. From this foundation, the rest will sprout.
Why those habits?
Other habits might come and go, but these four remain the bedrock upon which all Renaissance Men have built themselves: These men wrote, both in private journals and public treatises; they moved, be it through sacred walks, arduous hikes, or martial training; they read, not just any material, but essential works of enduring wisdom; and they learned, constantly, voraciously—relentlessly.
These habits remain relevant today because they address the core aspects of human experience and potential. They also happen to work in perfect harmony to promote self-cultivation:
- Writing: Daily writing cleanses the weeds that plague your mind: the weak and useless beliefs, the latent fears, doubts, and pointless ruminations that devalue your mental real estate.
- Moving: Daily movement tills the soil and prepare it for new seeds to be planted. Just like plowing fields allows for land to freshen up and bring nutrients to the surface, so does movement allow for the best of your body to come to life.
- Reading: Daily reading plants new concepts, perspectives, and ideas within yourself. Contrary to the ones you weeded out, these can be full of life and potential, and infuse your body with timeless wisdom.
- Learning: Finally, daily learning nourishes your self through practical insights, challenges, and skills that fertilize your growth. Through this practice, you begin expanding your power and achieving mastery over matter, others, and yourself.
And so, having cleansed, tilled, planted, and nourished your soil, you will begin to flourish.
